Tips to Success

I was fortunate enough to be able to listen to the co-presidents of the Disney Interactive Media Group (DIMG), John Plesants and Jim Pitaro, give a little talk yesterday. During the talk, someone asked for some general tips to success. Here is what they told us.

John: Move to opportunity, where there’s a tailwind.

Jim: Work hard, be nice to people (well, and have some talent too).

John: Do what you’re passionate about.

Jim: Run it out! Do the easy things. Once you hit the 99mph fastball, you gotta do the easy part too - run the base

John: Quality is the best business model.

Jim: Stay away from the “my’s” - no “my team.” Replace with “our.”

John: Breathe. Be with your team, listen. Actually listen.

Jim: No trombone oil. You could be the best maker of trombone oil in the world, but there will still be only 65 gallons used each year in the whole world. You can be the best of something so small but the rest of the world doesn’t care. Know your priorities.

John: (from Bill Gross) Big things and small things take the same amount of effort.

Jim: Hire people you would work for... hire people smarter than you.

John: Work with great people. Follow great people.

Jim: It’s okay to fail. Learn quickly, move on.

John: Be decisive. The worst decision is no decision.

Jim: Invest in things and people that are working. Focus on your stars, not opportunities.

Jim: Be on time. People are too caught up with being fashionably late.

John: Be optimistic, be kind, be honest. Be positive! Give energy! Give honest, constructive feedback.

Jim: Work for a company that promotes a good work-life balance.

John: Work for a company where you respect its values.

John: ABL - Always Be Learning. Be patient. Only be impatient when you are not learning.
